The Language of Love

Sometimes the best way to make a point is through a story. Here’s one for you:

One evening a father was tucking his small son into bed. He kissed his son on the forehead and said, “I give you my love.”

The boy’s eyes popped open. “Where is it?”

His father’s forehead creased. “Where is what?”

“Your love. I can’t see it.”

His father smiled. “Love isn’t something you can see. You can just see its effects.”

The boy frowned. “What do you mean?”

Patting his son’s head, the father said, “I’ll show you tomorrow night.”

The next night found father and son at a power station for the electrical company where the father worked. He took his son to see the water pouring into the turbines causing them to turn. They watched for a bit and the father said, “Can you see the electricity?”

A frown crossed the boy’s face and he shook his head. “No.”

The father then took his son over to a window that overlooked the lights of the city sparkling like a blanket of jewels laid out across the valley. “But can you see the effects of the electricity?”

A smile glimmered in the boy’s mahogany brown eyes. “Yes, I can see that.”

“So you know it’s there because you can see its effects.”

A wide grin took over the boy’s face and he wiggled and laughed. “Yes!”

“Love is like that too. When people smile at each other, when they help each other, when they care for each other – that’s love. That’s the special language of love. You can’t see it, but you can see its effects. Now do you understand?”

The boy hugged his father and whispered, “Yes!”

There are times that we are so busy, we forget to speak the language of love. I know I’m guilty. How many times have I failed to let a driver in before me?  How many times have I failed to smile at someone? How many times have I forgotten to thank someone for something?

But there are times I do remember to do those things. And the feeling you get in your heart when someone waves gratefully at you is so amazing. And the feeling you get when you do something bigger is even better.

Love is a universal language that has no barriers. We all know it and we all can see its beautiful effects as clearly as that little boy saw the effects of electricity that evening with his father.

I hope you get a few jewels of love today and have a chance to hand some out too.
