My husband and I were on a road trip recently, and it didn’t take long before the windshield amassed a heap of dirt and bugs causing our vision to be marred and distorted.
Easy to fix – my husband pulled over into the next gas station we saw and eradicated the grime thus enabling us to proceed with clear vision.
If only it were so easy in life. Jealousy; greed; pride; and prejudice can amass a heap of grime on our view of the world, causing our outlook to be distorted and diminished.
How do we overcome this?
The first thing to do is to listen to yourself. If you find your anger rising, if you find you don’t want to listen to what another person is saying, if you find that when you look at another person the first thing you feel is hate, then seek out ways to change your attitude.
You can realize negative thoughts often lead to negative outcomes. That’s the last thing you want.
You can realize that sometimes when your expectations are too high, the disappointment leads to negative thoughts. When my children were young, there were times when I prepared for an outing with them imagining their delight. When they didn’t react that way, I would be sad. I finally realized that I was the problem, not them. They were having fun, just not always in the way I expected them to. When I finally let go of my expectations, I had fun too.
You can forgive. I have trouble with this one sometimes. I’ve found that dwelling in the past is a big, negative waste of time. When you catch yourself doing it, stop yourself. Say the word, “Stop” out loud if you must. Live in the beautiful present.
Move forward and embrace change. Eradicating negative parts of your life whether it has to do with relationships or anything else, will help you to clean off your windshield.
Focus on the positives. Notice the flowers in your life. Plant the seeds for more.
And soon, your view will be clear, enabling you to proceed on your life’s journey with a bright vision.
